Harvey enlisted in the Civil War as a corporal in Co. C, 36th Regiment, Iowa Infantry on Aug 24, 1862 and mustered Sep 18, 1862. He was promoted to Third Corporal Feb 9, 1863. He was wounded in the face and was taken prisoner Apr 25, 1864, Mark's Mills, Ark. for 10 months. Harvey was promoted to Second Corporal May 1, 1865 and mustered out Aug 24, 1865 at Devall's Bluff, Ark.

Harvey married Mary A. Chrisman 15 Oct 1865 in Appanoose Co., IA.
