U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Kentucky, in 1826, he graduated from the law department of Transylvania University, in 1847, was admitted to the bar and practiced in Ballard County, Kentucky. He was the Commonwealth Attorney, (1851-55) and served in the Kentucky State Senate, (1867-71). In 1879, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress, the Forty-seventh Congress, and as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
