KANSAS CITY, Mo. - James Richard “Dick” Jones, 85, of Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at his home. Mr. Jones was born July 25, 1919, in Callao, Mo., the son of James Alfred and Louise A. Phipps Jones. Mr. Jones grew up in St. Joseph, graduating from Benton High School in 1940, where he was captain of the football and track team and president of the senior class. He loved to play golf, enjoyed fine music and was an accomplished poet. Mr. Jones was a World War II veteran serving from September 1940 to September 1945 with the 128th Armored Field Artillery, 6th Armored Division, 3rd Army in the European Campaign starting with the Normandy Invasion. Moving to Kansas City, Mo., in 1945, he was a sales representative for the Stowe Hardware and Supply Co., covering and living in Topeka from 1948 to 1991. He moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2000, returning to Kansas City in 2002. He was a member of First Christian Church of Topeka, where he held several offices, including chairman of the board. He was also a member of American Legion Capitol Post No. 1 and Masonic Lodge No. 90 in Topeka. He married Mavis Rose Clampitt, also a 1940 graduate of Benton High School, on Dec. 18, 1941, and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Mavis Jones, of the home; a son, Randall S. Jones and wife, Lynn, Monument, Colo.; a daughter, Marla S. Jones and husband, David Crowle, Los Angeles; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Jones, Iowa City, Iowa; and a sister, Ruby Erickson, Lawrenceville, Ga. He is preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and two sisters. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, 3609 Frederick Blvd., St. Joseph, Mo. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Military grave side services will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 4929 Frederick Ave., St. Joseph, Mo. The family suggest memorials to Kansas City Hospi ce of the Northland, in care of the funeral chapel.
