In all, Dale and May Allen had 17 children. Their 8th child was a boy who was still born in 1915. Fourteen months later Edna Bell was born, their 9th child. She died at the age of 5 months of complications from the "old fashioned" measles. These two deaths divided the family in half with a four year gap in children. The first seven children were referred to as the "first" family" and the surviving eight as the "second" family.
