Emilie Therese Geisse was born about in 1834, the daughter of Francis "William" Geisse, Philadelphia merchant, and Eliza W. Ginder.

Emilie was married to Gustavus A. Benson, a wholesale grocer, and they had Richard Wright Benson (1858-1865); Edith Benson Helme (1859-1941); Francis W. Benson (1862-1931); Gustave A. Benson (1864-1885); Emilie "Nellie" Benson Knipe (1867-1958); Alexander M. Benson (1870-1912); and James F. Benson (1873-1908).

Emilie died on July 20, 1898, at 6733 Emlen street in Germantown and was buried at Central Laurel Hill Cemetery in the section of Millionare Row.
