MRS. ETHEL F. HAYES
Ethel F. hayes, 91, of Route 302, died Wednesday in a local nursing home after a long illness. She was the widow of Co. David E. Hayes who died in 1943. Col. Hayes was commander of the First Battalion, Maine State Guard, a member of the advisory staff of Herbert Hoover when the latter was administrator of food and relief after World War I. and was stationmaster at Union Station, Portland from 1934 until 1941. Mrs. Hayes was born April 20, 1880, a Macwahoc, daughter of Frank and Emma Bowley Kimball. She was graduated from Yarmouth High School and taught at North Yarmouth and in the Panama Canal Zone where her husband was general agent of the Isthmian Canal Commission when the canal was under construction. Mrs. Hayes also lived at Rumford several years. She attended the Congregational Church and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Susie B. Hodsdon, of Yarmouth; a granddaughter, Mrs. Meredith Alexander of Massachusetts; three great-grandchildren and four nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at 749 Congress St. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth.
