Victim Is Daughter of Col. David E. Hayes
Lynn. Mass., Nov. 25 - Mrs. Marian Roberts, 30, of Saugus, daughter of Col. David E. Hayes of the Maine State Guard drowned in the surf at Lynn Beach today despite the efforts of a Fire Department rescue squad to save her. Medical Examiner Nathaniel P. Breed, who made the identification, said she was graduated from Bates College in 1933. An eight-year-old boy saw her tumble into the high surf and called firemen, who pulled her ashore but were unable to revive her. Mrs. Roberts was identified by a Christmas Club bank book and a grocery bill found in her purse. Medical Examiner Breed said preliminary investigation showed death was accidental. The Col. Clayton Pevear and Bernard Kelley of the Lynn Fire Department rescue squad tied ropes around themselves and dashed into the surf but twice they were tossed around and thrown back to beach by the waves. With the aid of 30-foot long ladders to steady them they returned and Pevear grasped Mrs. Roberts about 40 feet offshore and brought her in. Other firemen worked over Mrs. Roberts for two hours with inhalators but were unable to revive her. Police said that Mrs. Roberts left home this morning to do some Thanksgiving shopping. Her husband, they said, is a defense worker. Col. David E. Hayes of North Windham, commanding officer of the First Battalion, Maine State Guard, left Wednesday night for Saugus, Mass., on learning of the death of his daughter, Mrs. Marian E. Roberts, in the neighhboring city of Lynn, Mass. She was married to Mr. Roberts about a year and a half ago. While attending Bates College, Mrs. Roberts, formerly of Rumford and Portland, was prominent in dramatics and played the leading roles in several plays. A daughter by a previous marriage also survives.
