Arthur H. Korte, 95, Seymour, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at Schneck Medical Center, Seymour.

Mr. Korte retired from the communications industry in 1981 after more than four decades of service. He began his career in 1933, serving as a messenger for Southern Indiana Telephone & Telegraph Co., known today as Verizon. During his career, he held several positions with the company. In 1937, he worked on the line crew in Seymour. In 1941, he was transferred to Loogootee, where he served as a combination man for two years, installing and repairing phones in Loogootee and Shoals. It was during that time the Crane Naval Ammunition Depot was built, and Arthur was responsible for installing and repairing its phones as well. In 1943, he was transferred back to Seymour to help install the common battery switchboard at the Army Air Base at Freeman Field. He also was responsible for the installation and repair of phones in Brownstown, Vallonia and Medora. He served as a combination man until 1953. Since that time, he had served as test-board man, outside plant supervisor and most recently as customer service superintendent. He held the latter position for 2½ years and played a major role in the development of a centralized warehouse program for Contel in Seymour.

Arthur was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Eagles Club for more than 50 years. He was a past member of the Indiana Council of Fraternal Veterans and Social Societies, of which he had been president in 1982 and 1992.

Born in Jackson County, on Feb. 9, 1916, he was the son of Fred and Sophia Eggersman Korte, both of whom preceded him in death. On Feb. 21, 1942, he married Norma J. Hanger in Louisville, Ky., and she preceded him in death on April 29, 1982. On May 26, 1984, he married Juanita Johnson Owens in Seymour, and she survives.
