He also worked for five years as service officer for the Veterans Administration in the Boston area, and previously for New York Life Insurance Co for 14 years.
Born in Rochester, Vt., he lived for 36 years in West Springfield. He was a member of First Church of Christ in Springfield.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the Samuel Sherwood Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Melha Shrine.
He leaves his wife, Paula Roberts of West Springfield; a son, Ralph V. Roberts Jr. of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Gail DeShane of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Meredith Alexander of Springfield; three step-brothers, Carl Phelps of Hamden, Conn., Leo Phelps of Burlington, Vt., and Alfred Phelps of Florida; a stepsister, Lucy Brace of Stackboro, Vt., and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be private.
