"In Remembrance.

At an early hour Monday morning, August 1, 1904, at his home [in Pleasant Dale] near Augusta, W. Va., the death summons came to call a brother, friend, neighbor, a kind husband and loving father from earth, and S[amuel] D[ade] Powell closed his eyes in a peaceful sleep that knows no waking until it passes over beyond the river where angels dwell to meet those who die in the Lord. Though his sufferings with cancer of the stomach for more than a year, were what none of us can now realize, never a murmur or complaint escaped his lips, ever meekly submitting to the Divine will, patiently awaiting the Master's call to come up higher where sufferings are no more and the weary are at rest. Mr. Powell was twice married, his second wife Miss Belle Saville, survives him. His first wife, Miss Martha E. Pepper, preceded him to the land that is fairer than day ten years ago. To them were born 8 children, 6 of whom are living, Robert B. of Texas, Frank J., of Martinsburg, W. Va., Charles B., Flora V., Edward N. and wife, Minnie M. and husband, H. H. Smith, all of this community, and all of whom were by his bedside when the end came also had kept a faithful watch over their father, ever ready and willing to do all in their power for his comfort. May God help the lonely widow, the fatherless children and friends who knew him to meet him in Heaven. And may they ever look to their Heavenly Father for comfort, who doeth all things well. Mr. Powell was 64 years 3 months and 14 days old, and had been a consistent member of the Methodist Church South, for a number of years previous to his death. Funeral service by his pastor, Rev. Mellville, after which he was laid to rest in the family burying ground [Powell Cemetery in Pleasant Dale] in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends, to await the resurrection morn."
