William continued the tradition of prominence in politics and military service begun generations before in both paternal and maternal branches of his family. The Vaiden family home was in Barhamsville, New Kent County and his mother was from the Harwood family of Charles City County Virginia. Before his father who served in the Civil War on staff of Jefferson Davis, his ancestors include Major James Christian of the Revolutionary War and Sir Edward Harwood killed in battle in Europe. He married Marion on November 23, 1882. She was the daughter of Dr. John Langhorne and Lucy Lea who had several generals in her family. Among his positions in Perry County and the military were the following:
