Paul E. Braden, 34th Judicial Circuit Judge, passed away Friday, June 3, 2011 in Corbin, KY. He had been Circuit Judge for Whitley and McCreary Counties since 1995 and was serving as Chief Regional Judge for the Cumberland Region at the time of his death.


Born August 14, 1939 in Appalachia, VA, he was a son of the late William Edgar Braden and Blanche Baker Braden. He graduated from Middlesboro High School in 1957 and with a Bachelor's degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 1961. After serving in the Air Force, Mr. Braden entered the University of Kentucky College of Law and graduated from law school with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1966. He was admitted to the bar the following year.


He entered the private practice of law first in Lexington and then Corbin. After serving as a federal public defender, he practiced in several private law firms including Sutton, Forcht & Braden; Forcht Braden & Braden with his late brother, Attorney Robert M. Braden; and Braden and Glastetter.


In 1985, Mr. Braden became Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the 34th Judicial Circuit. He was subsequently appointed Commonwealth's Attorney by Governor Martha Layne Collins in 1987. He also served as Assistant Whitley County Attorney and then District Judge for Whitley and McCreary Counties. In 1995, he was appointed Circuit Judge for the 34th Judicial Circuit by Governor Paul Patton, a position to which he was subsequently re-elected twice without opposition. In 2009, he was appointed by Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr. as Chief Regional Judge for the Cumberland Region, having previously served as the Vice Chief Regional Judge, and was on the Whitley County Courthouse Advisory Board.


Judge Braden was a recognized authority in several areas of law including complex litigation and death penalty cases, and was a frequent lecturer at judicial conferences and the Circuit Judges' Association's Academy training other judges. He was named the state's Outstanding Trial Judge in 2008 by the Kentucky Justice Association. He served with distinction on the Education Committee and the Executive Committee of the Circuit Judges' Association.


Prior to becoming Circuit Judge, Mr. Braden was active in local and statewide politics and served in numerous local organizations. He was active in youth sports leagues, local civic clubs and charitable organizations, including Habitat for Humanity. He was an avid golfer and nature enthusiast.


In addition to a grateful public, he is survived by his wife, Linda Kathryn Gibson Braden; children William Paul Todd Braden and wife Charlotte of Clearwater, FL, Erin Elizabeth Keck and husband Brandon of Corbin, and Aric Brian Young and wife Kim of Corbin; grandchildren BreeAnn Braden, John Braden Keck, Barrett Keck, Aric Young, and Amanda Young; sister, Nancy Jane Bahrman of Middlesboro; aunt, Helen Baker of Middlesboro; brother- and sister-in-law, Robert Daniel and Patsy Gibson of Blountville, TN; former brother-in-law, Thor H. Bahrman, II of Corbin; nephew, Thor H. Bahrman, III and several cousins, other family members and countless friends.


His visitation will be from 5 until 9 pm Tuesday at Central Baptist Church in Corbin. The funeral will be held at 11 am Wednesday at the Church.


Interment will follow at the Sutton-Skinner Cemetery at Woodbine, with military honors by the American Legion Post 88 honor guard.


Honorary pallbearers will be George Crabtree and members of the Whitley and McCreary County Bar Associations.
