Spc. Michael B. Cook Jr., 27, of Middletown, Ohio; died June 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with indirect fire. They were assigned to the1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. Spc Cook was born to Michael Sr. and Patti Cook on June 6, 1984, in Lowell Mass. Mike graduated from Salem High School in 2003. He entered the army in October 2009 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. Mike's many military accomplishments include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and a promotion to Specialist. His legacy lives on through his wife, Samantha Mitchell-Cook, and his two loving children, Hailee (7) and Michael III (2).He is also survived by his brother Lucas (16), sister Kimberly (14), grandparents Beatrice Mitchell-Cook, the late Benjamin Cook and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
