- Kathleen Shellhouse Matthews, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. A service celebrating the life of Mrs. Matthews will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Tirzah ARP Church with the Rev. Dr. Barry Eller and the Rev. Andy Putnam officiating. Burial will be at Ebenezer ARP Church Cemetery.
- Mrs. Matthews was born on Jan. 4, 1926, and was raised in Aiken. She was the daughter of the late Charles Bernice Shellhouse and Isabel Coleman Shellhouse.
- She was the widow of James Simril Matthews Jr., with whom she worked to found and develop Matthews Construction Company. Mrs. Matthews was a longtime member of Ebenezer ARP Church and Tirzah ARP Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and serving her churches. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially making porcelain dolls. One of her greatest pleasures came from sharing her talents with others.
- Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband, James Simril Matthews Jr.; her parents; and her siblings, Charles Shellhouse, Robert Shellhouse, Mary Elizabeth Scott and Frances Epps.
- Mrs. Matthews is survived by her daughter, Nancy Matthews Garner; her sons, James S. "Jimmy" Matthews III (Wanda) and Charles S. Matthews; seven grandchildren, Jay Matthews (Sara), Chris Matthews (Melanie), Rebecca Crumpton (Russ), Matt Garner, Matthew Frye, Katie Frye and Joseph Matthews; four great-grandchildren, C.J. and Madison Matthews, Anna Kate and Will Crumpton; her sisters-in-law, Lillian Matthews, Evonne Matthews, Florine Shellhouse and Dora Shellhouse; her brother-in-law, James C. Epps; and many nieces and nephews.
