MARY JANE HALE ROMMEL

Mary Jane Hale Rommel, 86, of Kerrville, Texas died on Thursday, January 20, 2003 at a local hospital of complications from pneumonia. She was born in 1916 in Houston, Texas to Dorenda and Herman Hale.

Mrs. Rommel graduated from The Kinkaid School, San Jacinto High School and Rice Institute. She organized the first Mothers' March on Polio in Harris County in 1951; was a columnist, writing "So You're Moving" for The Houston Chronicle 1964-73 and The Kerrville Daily Times 1987-2003; owned and operated with her husband, Ross, after he retired from Exxon, El Buzon, a clothing boutique in Ingram, Texas; was the first woman Rotarian invited to join the Kerrville Noon Rotary Club, is a Paul Harris Fellow, and was a team leader for The Group Study Exchange, Mexico, 1988; and served twice as president of Kerrville Performing Arts Society. She also served on the board of Kerrville Chamber of Commerce and was named 1999 Kerr County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Woman of the Year. In her Texas Press Women Service she received the Texas Communicator of Achievement in 1993. She also served as past Vice-President and Board member of the Rice University Alumni Association. She was a fundraiser par excellence. These are but a few of Mrs. Rommel's many lifetime accomplishments. Hers was a "Life well Lived." Mrs. Rommel will be most remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend, whose generosity poured out to everyone she met. She was a supreme catalyst in encouraging each person she encountered to strive to be the best they could be, regardless of the endeavor.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Alexander Ross Rommel, and two grandchildren, George Rommel and Julia Eleanor Eichorn.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie Rommel-Eichorn and husband Peter Eichorn of Carmel, California, a son, A. Ross Rommel and wife Deborah of Houston and grandchildren Emily Rommel, Alexander (Andy) Rommel, Sarah (Sadie) Rommel, Benjamin Eichorn, and Elizabeth Eichorn.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kerrville at 10:00 a.m. and a graveside service will be on Sunday, January 26 at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Rotary Club of Kerrville, International Scholarships, 843 Sidney Baker, Suite 101, Kerrville, Texas 78028, Schreiner University, 2100 Memorial Blvd., Kerrville, Texas 78028, or the charity of one's choice. Overby Funeral Home of Kerrville is in charge of arrangements.
