Daniel F. Summitt was born in 1826 to Francis and Elizabeth Summitt in Lincoln County North Carolina. He married Sarah Knipe on Septermber 27, 1845 and together they had eight children. Daniel enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 8, 1861 and was assigned the rank of private. He served in Company D of North Carolina's 1st Infantary Regiment. Daniel died on Janaury 13, 1864 in a Richmond Virginia Confederate Hospital of injuries he suffered in battle. He is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond Virginia.
