As a child Mr. Elmer J. Kavanaugh was raised in the 4300 block of Farlin Ave. in north Saint Louis. He attended Beaumont High School.
Mr. Kavanaugh joined the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department in 1953.
Officer Kavanaugh was only on the department for 2 years when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1955.
He was sent to Fort Leonardwood for basic training and advanced individual training before he was sent overseas as a peacekeeper after the Korean War had ended.
After the Korean War Conflict, Officer Elmer Kavanaugh rejoined the ranks of the Saint Louis Police Department.
Officer Kavanaugh was promoted to Sergeant in 1963. During his career he was assigned to Districts 4, 5, 6, 11, 4th District Bureau, Fraud Section, Check Squad, Private Security Section, and Police Reserves. He retired after 40 years of service in 1993.
He married the love of his life Carole L. (Dietzel) Kavanaugh on 10/11/1952, and they were married for 57 years. They had 4 children.
Sgt. Kavanaugh died at St. Joesph's West Hospital in St. Charles County, Missouri.
He left behind to mourn his passing his wife Carole, and 3 daughters, and 1 son. They are Gail Ribaudo, who is a retired counselor, Captain Gwen Kavanaugh Spicer, Officer Ginger Kavanaugh, and Officer Timothy Kavanaugh, all of whom followed in there fathers footsteps on the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
He was predeceased by a sister, the late Cloey JoAnn Bielefeld.
He was also the loving grandfather of Scott, Jacob, Jennifer, Emily and Kelly; Our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, God father, and dear friend to many.
