A very sad accident occurred on last Friday, June 25, 1909, near the noon hour at the outlet of the slough at Lake Rebecca, just above Libbey's mill, when Harold L Fitch, who was swimming with Henry Gale and Albert Brandenbourger, was carried out beyond his depth, by the waves of a passing steamboat and was drowned. The other boys were rescued by F. Weimer who was fishing some distance away in a boat. Harold's body was recovered about an hour after the accident, by Michael Mollick and was taken to the undertaking rooms of Mertz & son.

Harold was the only child of his mother Mrs. Jennie Hall, and the news of her bereavement was a severe blow to her. He was born in Hastings February 2, 1896, to Harry P Fitch and Jennie Cook, and was a great favorite among his schoolmates and companions by whom, as well as in the home circle, his loss is keenly felt. He was active and energetic and was rapidly developing many manly traits of character. The entire community expresses deep sympathy for his bereaved ones.

His funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at half past three o'clock from the Presbyterian Church, Reverend R. Lewis officiating. The funeral was largely attended. His classmates and companions attending in a body. The interment was in Lakeside Cemetery, with his father.
