James enlisted from Tremont, Hancock County, Maine, as a Corporal in Company G, 11th Regiment Maine Infantry, on 4 November 1861. He was promoted to Full Sergeant and officially mustered out on 11 Sep 1862 in Baltimore, a few days before his death at the Lexington Street Hospital.

James Abbot was buried on 15 Sep 1862 in what was formerly plot M-337 before the land for the National Cemetery was purchased from Loudon Park Cemetery.

He died at the Lexington Street Hospital.
