Curtis was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas to Abe Washington Adams and Ethel Hamilton Adams. As a young man Curtis worked in a wood mill and as a Baker in Arkansas.

He came to California in 1941 and worked as a construction worker and started in the oil fields. He retired as a Drilling Supervisor for Thums Long Beach Company.

He is survived by his wife; Maxine, his 5 sons; 9 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.
