Funeral services for Thomas Giles Cain, 73, once heralded as a man who had built 7,000 oil derricks in California, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mottell's & Peek Chapel, 3rd St. and Alamitos Ave.
Cain, of 32 Portuguese Bend Rd., Rolling Hills, died Wednesday. He was owner and operator of the Cain Rig Building Co. at Wilmington. SHORTLY AFTER the turn of the century, Cain was driving 20-mule team on the borax-ore haul between Bakersfield and mines in the Frazier Mountains. A few years ago, Cain returned from a trip to the Daggett area with one of the huge wagons similar to those he guided down the treacherous Grapevine route before a road was built. The huge wagon became a Rolling Hills landmark. In 1921, Cain came to the Long Beach-Wilmington area and began his derrick construction business.
Starting in the old Valley oil fields, Cain's work later was extended to the Los Angeles Basin.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; daughters, Mrs. Donna Kay Staker, Mrs. Evelyn Smith; sons, T. Irvin, Olif, John T.; brother, Graver; sister, Mrs. Marguerite Starke; stepson, Don Yager-Lehner, and half-brother, Roy Agnew. (Long Beach Independent, CA, Fri, 8 Jan 1960, p. D-2)
