Thomas accompanied his sisters, Mary Susan and Letitia and his uncle, Richard, to America on the Cosmopolite, reaching New York on the 13th May, 1835. Upon arriving in New York, Thomas apparently went directly to Iowa rather than going with Mary Susan to Ohio. The 1850 census of District Nine, Iowa City, shows Thomas Banbury (34), Joiner and H, born England. However by 1856 he had married Jane Hoxie and his father, Thomas and mother in law, Electra were living with them.
Thomas was a carpenter, but also was something of an architect. He prepared the plans in 1853 for a brick building to be used for the Iowa Female Collegiate Institute. In 1853, the Iowa City Council granted the west half of College hill park to the trustees for a site for the seminary. Plans for the building were prepared by Thomas for a building of brick with stone trimmings which was thirty by eighty feet and three stories high. Thomas served briefly in the US volunteers in the Civil War. The Iowa Civil War roster shows him as a captain in February, 1865 and a brevet major on the 25th July, 1865. He was mustered out on the 31st July, 1865. Thomas died on the 29th June, 1883 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery. He left all his belongings which were substantial, to his wife, Jane. If she didn't survive him then to his beloved nephew Richard Hoxie of Washington D.C. who for many years had been like a son. They had no children of their own. Jane died in 1883 and was buried with her husband in Oakland Cemetery. She left all the estate to Richard.
