"JOHN BARLOW
ACCIDENTLY KILLED
John Barlow, chairman of the first board of county commissioners in this county and one of the old citizens, was suddenly killed Tuesday about 3 p.m.
Mr. Barlow was working on lease 283 about ten miles north east of Bigheart. He was standing nearby while the drillers were puling some casing from a well. he had just reached the spot to see the superintendent, when the chain with which they were drawing the casing broke, the end striking him in the forehead, killing him instantly.
His body was taken to Bartlesville by the company's undertaker and will be taken to Caney, Kansas, the family's old home, for burial.
Funeral services will be held at that place Sunday at ten o'clock.
John Barlow was born at Neosho, Missouri, August 28, 1857, being 60 years, 4 months and 24 days old at his death. He settled at Caney, Kans. in an early day and was identified with the early history of that section of Kansas. A number of years ago he moved across the state line and became prominently identified with the development of this county being elected a member of the first board of county commissioners, a position he filled with honor. Since quitting public service, he has been engaged in contracting in different lines, being in the oil field at the time of his death.
He leaves an aged wife and large family of children and hundreds of friends to mourn his departure."
