Thomas D. Heald, 63, of Chula Vista, a retired security guard at North Island Naval Air Station, died Saturday in a local hospital. Heald was born in Texas and lived in the county 20 years. He served in the Navy from 1937 to 1958 and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Gambra Bay and the Battle of Leyte. Heald was a member of the Gambra Bay Association and the Fleet Reserve Assn.
His wife, Helen (Hendrickson); a [step]daughter, Verda Marone of Chula Vista; three sisters; a brother; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild survive.
