Thelma C. Sumpter, 92, of Trinidad and formerly of Branson, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011. Thelma was born on February 7, 1919 in Higbee, Colorado to Dude & Willie Edna (Young) Corbin. She married Howard B. Sumpter on April 14, 1937 in Raton, New Mexico; he preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1995.

Thelma was a life long member of the Las Animas County Cowbells and also the Branson Trinchera Ladies Club. She was the Silver Queen of the 1994 Trinidad Roundup. Thelma attended many of her grandchildren's 4-H activities, going to ball games, and club activities. She enjoyed taking care of the ranch and being a cattle woman.

Thelma is survived by her sons, Howard C. Sumpter of Kim; Richard (Cindy) Sumpter of Fowler; daughter, Lois (Jack) Jolly of Trinidad; daughter-in-law, Billee Sumpter of Branson; grandson, Mike (Jeanette) Jolly of Parker and their children, Janay and Jackie; grandson, Don (Judy) Jolly of Del Norte and their children, Jake and Ila; grandson, Brian Jolly of Rifle; granddaughter, Cheri (Jason) Kraft of Ft. Collins and their children, Kyli, Tyler, Mataya, and Clay; grandson, Justin (Kodi) Sumpter of Branson and their children, Jacee, Caleb, and Destry; grandson, Jeremy (Dusk) Sumpter of Ft. Collins and their children, Cole and Jagger; granddaughter, Casey (Brian) Yahn of Ft. Collins and their children, Reece and Max; grandson, Wade (Linsay) Sumpter of Fowler; grandson, Brad (Stephanie) Sumpter of Umbarger, TX and their children, Zane and Aden; grandson, David Sumpter of Manhattan, KS; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons, James Sumpter and Billy Sumpter; brother, Tom (Thelma) Corbin; sister, Ella (Bob) Sumpter.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel with Pastor Greg Brown of the Kim Baptist Church and Pastor Don Brown (Ret.) officiating.

Interment will follow at the Higbee Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5th from 4 to 6 p.m. also at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
