ABERNATHY, Betty Gayle Dickerson, 70, of Richmond, and formerly of Kenbridge, Va., lost her battle with cancer April 28, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Wilson L. and Alice Gayle Ferguson Dickerson; and wife of Claude A. Abernathy. She was a graduate of Madison College, now James Madison University, and a member of Discovery United Methodist Church. Betty Gayle is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Claude Ashley Abernathy Jr. and Mary Sam; daughter, Susan Gayle Abernathy, all of Glen Allen; five grandchildren, Tori, Claudia and Logan Abernathy, Jonathan and Kelsey Sligh, all of Glen Allen; brother and sister-in-law, Wilson L. Dickerson Jr. and Anne Carter Dickerson of Altavista; niece, Elizabeth Carter Cosgrove and husband, Chad, of Powhatan; nephew, Wilson L. Dickerson III and wife, Melanie, of Richmond; grandnieces, Olivia and Genevieve Cosgrove of Powhatan and Madeline Dickerson of Richmond. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 30, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Henrico, Va. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 1, 2011, at 2 p.m., in the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at Kenbridge Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society .
