Ria Bartok was born in Einbeck Germany and her mother was an opera singer (no relation to the composer Bartok). Her real name was Marie-Louise Pleisse and she was well educated and fluent in four languages, a pretty girl with a sensitive nature; who became a singer at age 20. Bartok became part of the Ye-Ye French Girl Singers who were popular and dominated the music scene in the 60's.
Signed with RCA and released one E.P..then moved to Columbia(the French Label of EMI) and released several more E.P's. Columbia obviously recognised Bartok's vocal talent and saw her as an alternate to the very successful Sylvie Vartan.
Bartok always showed a innate Frenchness,a cute seductive kitten like quality and her vocals showed a very considerable range.
Her song 'Ecoute Mon Coeur' when she sings the line...'Je suis Bien' she reveals how sensitive a performer she was and how appealing a singer.
Bartok's back catalogue is now available having been re-mastered at EMI's Abbey Road Studios,London,England (Studio 2 here was used by The Beatles) and Bartok does sound great on the re-issue of her material, great sounding vocals with smooth harmonies from this talented singer.
Cause of Death: Accidental Fire at her home.
