Richard Carl Funkhouser was born the first of five children to Richard and Nancy (Gloser) Funkhouser on his folks farm south of Logansport, Indiana on what is now CR-400S. That farm land is now part of the Logansport municipal airport. He was known by and called Carl by extended family, (I suppose to differentiate him from Richard, his father), but by the nickname Dick to his friends.

OBITUARY:

Richard Carl Funkhouser, 86, of Peru, Indiana passed away at 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 29, 2010 at his residence, with his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Margaret at his side. He was born in Cass County, Indiana on April 11, 1924 the son of Richard and Nancy Glosser Funkhouser. Dick married Mary Margaret Downing in North Carolina on May 7, 1954 and she survives.

Dick graduated from Washington Township High School in Cass County in 1942 and as part of America's Greatest Generation, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. As a WW II veteran he particapated in action against the enemy at Saipan, Marianas Islands and Marshall Islands. He was wounded in action on two separate occasions and received two purple hearts. His military decorations also include the WW II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Dick was a truck driver and dispatcher for North-Central Oil Co. for more than 25 years; he then worked for Maggard Construction until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church, the Izaak Walton League and the Eagle's Lodge of Logansport. He and his wife Mary Margaret lovingly raised five daughters. He was an avid fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people. Richard had recently been selected as the recipient of the Chapter Achiever Award for the Indiana Division of The Izaak Walton League of America and was scheduled to receive the award on Saturday June 5, 2010 at the State Convention.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary Margaret, are his daughters; Patricia Sommers and her husband Jerry of Mesa, Arizona, Ruth Leppanen and her husband Ikka of Surprise, Arizona, Betty Funkhouser of Portage, Indiana, Carla Denham and her husband Matt of Peru, and Janet Vincent of Peru; grandchildren Timothy Sommers, Matthew Sommers, Christopher Sommers, Mikael Leppannen, Elisa Leppannen, Erik Leppannen, Michell Hudson, Jennifer Denhem, Ashley Vincent, and Lindsey Vincent; six great-grandchildren; a brother Raymond Funkhouser of Cutler, Indiana; and two sisters, Mildred Thomason of Los Osos, California and Doris Hanawalt of Leonard, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Richard Carl Funkhouser will be held at 10:30 am June 2, 2010 at the St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 West Fifth St., Peru with Rev. Francis I. Kilcline III officiating. Burial will be at Mt Hope Cemetery with military graveside services provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Family and friends will gather from 4:00 -8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 West Main Street, Peru. There will be a prayer service at 8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
