JOHNSON - Retired businessman and real estate agent, Ben W. Johnson, Sr. died Friday, April 22, at Humana Hospital following a two-month illness. Johnson, who was also a former Kentucky State Representative (1930), was 85.

He was a member of Whitesburg Masonic Lodge, No. 754, F and AM, and Oleika Shrine Temple in Ashland.

He moved to Somerset from Ashland in 1952 and operated the Family Drive-In here until 1964.

He was a member of the Ferguson United Methodist Church.

The son of William and Lettie Jane Craft Johnson, he was born January 22, 1898, at Millstone (Letcher County).

His first marriage took place September 16, 1921, to the former Arminnie Combs, who preceded him in death May 13, 1939.

He was married January 28, 1962, in LaFayette, Georgia, to the former Georgia Herrin, who survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Ben W. Johnson, Jr., Burnside, and Charles Johnson, Vicco; three daughters, Lettie Cummins, Somerset, Bobbe Beauchamp, Michigan, and Peggy Bryan, Bushnell, Florida; two stepchildren, Janice Raley, Cincinnati, Ohio, and George A. Herrin, Somerset; a brother, Luther M. Johnson, Blackey; a sister, Victoria Sperry, Whitesburg; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A daughter, Joyce Allene, preceded him in death.

The Rev. Scott Purdum will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company.

Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
