After returning to China he was involved for the next two decades as a teacher of various disciplines in several universities and seminaries, including Fu-Jen University and the Major Seminary of Wu-Shi Diocese.
Moreover, at different times he served as Bishop's secretary in the Catholic Diocese of Swan-Hwa in Hopei Province, and as editor of the "Social Welfare Daily", published form Chungking during the Second World War. After the war, he was also involved in Catholic radio broadcasting and journalism teaching.
After his arrival in Hong Kong in 1949 he worked with the Diocesan Catholic Truth Society, served as a censor for Chinese Catholic publications and taught at several Catholic middle schools.
During the Second Vatican Council, Father Ly was in Rome, first as a press correspondent and later as an interpreter for Chinese bishops taking part in the extra-ordinary international meetings of the Catholic Church.
Father Ly died of heart failure at Canossa Hospital on Wednesday, August 5, 1981, aged 81.
A Requiem Mass was offered at St. Paul's convent chapel, Causeway Bay, on Saturday, August 8, at 10 am., followed by interment at the Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley. Bishop John Baptist Wu of Hong Kong led the obsequies.
