William Ellsworth Snell was my husband's grandfather.

William Ellsworth Snell was born in Kansas on April 1, 1883 and died at his home (in Sacramento, CA) of a heart attack on June 9, 1957. He was the son of Daniel Boone Snell and Phoebe Jane Wolfe. William had the following siblings: Elsie Pearl, Clarence Guy, Frederick Ralph, Albert, Glenn, Donald Elmer & Nellie Agnes.

His first wife was Olive Loretta (or perhaps Laveta) Ogden. With Olive he had the following children: Faye Lora, Mearl Fred & Grace Opal. Olive was born in "Indian Territory, OK" in 1885 and died in Bakersfield, CA in 1914. She is also buried here at Union Cemetery.

On Dec 24, 1915, William married Edna Blalock. They had 3 children: Warren Ellsworth, June & Mary Lou. Edna was born in 1883 and died in 1980.

William was a police captain in Kern Co, CA before joining the CA Highway Patrol in 1920. He was one of its earliest members (Badge #5). From 1939 to 1943, he was supervisor of the Equipment Department for the patrol in Sacramento and retired from that capacity. After his retirement, he lived for a time in Bakersfield, but returned to Sacramento in 1951. He then took up "the job" of BBQ chef and cooked at many barbecues given in the Sacramento area.

His many friends called him "Bill", those he worked with at the Highway Patrol called him "Ellsworth" (because so many "other Bill's" worked at the CHP) and his Blalock family called him "Will".

My husband, William, is named for his grandfather.
