There is a definite major discrepancy between all of the records located for him and the date of 1832 written as his birth on the tombstone. In the 1850 census he is located in Lafayette, MO and noted as age 26 b. abt 1825. In the 1860 census he is noted as a farmer, age 35 b. abt 1824; he is living with his mother, Catherine (noted as Farm Manager)- his wife has died - their daughter Ann, now age 2, is with him; his sister Amanda Cartmill and several Thornton family members are listed.
An 1863 record locates him in Siniabar, Jackson, MO. The 1870 census finds him living with Mary and their children: William 9, Martha 5, and Emma 3, and his daughter Anna (now 12). He is noted as being 46 and b. about 1824. In 1880 he is living with his wife Mary and all of their children in Blue Springs, Jackson, MO; the record notes his age as 55 and born about 1825. Anna, his child, is not shown. John Boyd Cartmill died near Oakland Church, 3 miles SW of Buckner, Jackson Co. MO.
