A 1991 survey (non-photographic) of this cemetery indicates the old broken tombstone in attached photograph and two other broken stones with surname of Chastain were located adjacent to the tombstones for Rev Joseph Lane Chastain and his two wives. Findagrave memorials created at this cemetery in 2003 included memorials for all three of those broken stones. The second of those broken stones was for the first wife of Joseph Lane Chastain; it had been replaced by the time photos of tombstones were added to the memorials for Rev Chastain and his wives (and memorial for the broken stone was deleted).
**(See below for more info about the third broken stone)

Chastain family history identifies two sons of Jonathan Davis Chastain and wife Rachel Stover Chastain as being Jacob Chastain, born Feb 1, 1836; and Walter, born 1843 and died young. That history does not include a middle initial for Jacob, nor a date of death, and does not cite a source for the exact date of birth used for Jacob. HOWEVER, the 1850 census of Gilmer Co, GA, HH #186, Rachel Chastain, includes Jacob W. Chastain, age 14. The age of Jacob in 1850 matches the 1840 census data for Jonathan D. Chastain which includes one son under the age of five (born 1835-1840). No further reference to Jacob Chastain has been found, making it highly unlikely that he was the J. L. Chastain of this memorial.

Sufficient documentation exists for a James L. Chastain, born in 1836 ...

In 1880 census of Gilmer Co, Ball Ground District (east of the Cartecay District & extending to Pickens Co line) is:
James L. Chastain, age 44, b GA
wife, Stacy, age 39, b GA
children ...
Mary J., age 14, b GA
William J., age 12, b GA
Oscar L., age 9, b TN
Marion L., age 7, b TN
Elizabeth, age 4, b GA
Western, age 1, b GA

This was first time this particular Chastain family appears in Gilmer Co census; but Chastain families were in other north Georgia counties. James L. Chastain was not found in 1870 Georgia census; ages & birthplace of two children suggests they were probably in TN.

Fannin Co census records for 1860 shows HH #329 as being James Chastain, age 59, b NC; wife Jane, age 63, b TN; and son James Chastain, Jr., age 24, b GA. (Fannin Co was created in 1854 from parts of Gilmer & Union Counties.) No James Chastain in 1850 Gilmer; however, in 1850 Union Co, Family #465 consisted of James Chastain, age 49, b SC; wife Jane, age 53, b TN, along with three daughters and one son, James Chastain, age 14, b GA. AND in 1840 Union Co, Family #484 for James Chastain appears to be parts of two households, but includes one male child under the age of 5 (born between 1835 & 1840).

Marriage records for Fannin Co, GA indicate that a James L. Chastain married Stacy A. Dillard on Feb 21, 1864.

In August of 2012, FAG memorial 95001990 was created for Stacy A. Dillard Chastain and linked to this memorial. That memorial indicates she was born Oct 13, 1840 & died May 9, 1917.

**The third broken stone was not found when this cemetery was photographed in early 2011. The inscription on the remnant of that stone as recorded in 1991 survey now speaks for itself:
