Wilmer Fredrick Achilles, 76, died Friday, March 17, 2000 at his winter home in Yuma, Arizona.
Wilmer was born October 9, 1923 at Inman, Kans., the son of August and Katherina (Knackstedt) Achilles.
He graduated from Hutchinson Business College, Hutchinson, Kansas in 1943 and attended Hutchinson
Junior College in 1947. Wilmer volunteered for the Army Air Force in 1943, receiving a year of military
schooling at various bases in the U.S. He spent 28 months in England. Upon returning home in 1946, he
married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Pike of Mt. Hope. Wilmer's working career started with one of
the first grocery store-service station combination in Hutchinson, the Supreme Service and Markets. He
moved his family to Worland in 1957 to open Fair Deal Furniture. In 1970, he purchased The Shoppe in
Worland which he operated until retirement in 1986.
Wilmer was a member of the Methodist Church in Worland, the Elks Club and American Legion. His
hobbies included bowling, golfing, camping, fishing and RV'ing. He also enjoyed traveling many places in
the U.S. and foreign countries. He has spent six months a year in Yuma since retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bruce and Leland; and sisters, Gertrude Achilles and
Ruby Rogers. Wilmer is survived by his wife, Eleanor, one daughter, Constance (Robert) Sweeney of
Kemmerer; granddaughter, Lara Sweeney of Green River and Alpine; grandson, Shane of Rock Springs;
brother Victor of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held March 20 at Sunset Vista Mortuary in Yuma. Graveside services will be held
in Ten Sleep at a later date. Memorials may be sent to your local hospice or charity of your choice.
