HIGHLANDS -- Mrs. Emma Smith Persanski, 87, a native of this place and a resident here until she moved to Florida more than 20 years ago, died Thursday at the Lakeview nursing home in Pensacola. Mrs. Persanski was a daughter of the late Jefferson and Sarah VanBrunt Cottrell.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edith Rogers of this place and Mrs. Myra Rackage of Richmond Hill, L. I., four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Posten funeral home, with Rev. Howard Shoemaker, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in All Saints' cemetery, Navesink.

Emmiarta "Emma" Cottrell is the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Cottrell and his wife Sarah Van Brunt. She was married to George E. Smith (b. 1856 , d.1823). George and Emma had three daughters Edith Smith Rogers, Sylvia M. Smith Ryan, and Myra Smith Rackage. Emma later married John Persanski (b. 1880, d. 1952.) They lived in Florida.

Jefferson Cottrell, mentioned in this memorial isThomas J. Cottrell (b. 1898, d. 1940) of Highlands. Known as Jeff, Thomas J. was the son of Emma's brother William R. Cottrell, and his first wife Mary E. "Mamie" Cottrell. Jeff apparently was friendly with Henry Patrick "Harry" Smith, a retired member of the US Coast Guard who died in a drowning incident in while vacationing in Florida with his wife, Mrs. Henrietta "Hattie" Smith. Both Jeff Cottrell and Harry were sailing guests of the yacht master of the vessel Pegasus, Captain Lester Irving Wheeler, also of Highlands, when Harry went missing in December 1939, and was later found drowned in the Sunset Canal, Miami Beach, Florida.

Gravesite Details

Believe the "Smith" is from a previous husband, can't figure out who yet. Also, her father Jefferson Cottrell is mentioned in the drowning tragedy of Henry Patrick Smith in Florida, so there may be an in-law relationship there.
