Hannah Bennett, the daughter of Nathaniel Bennett, Jr. and Annie Gill, was born April 3, 1790, in Massachusetts. The Bennett family arrived in Orwell, Oswego County, New York, from Rensselaer County in 1807. Orwell is but a few miles from the village of Redfield where the Samuel Brooks family lived. Eventually, Hannah met and married Stephen Brooks.
At the time of 1820 New York Federal Census, Hannah had four daughters under the age of ten. At that time she lived with her family in Redfield. Eventually Hannah would have a family of nine children, including Ann, Jane, Julia, Sarah, Oliver, Gilbert, Enoch, James Stewart, and Jabez.
Hannah and Stephen, who apparently had only limited sucess as a farmer, decided to make the move from their home of nearly 40 years to more fertile lands in Wisconsin. The couple settled their land claim in the early 1840s in Winnebago County. By the time the 1850 Wisconsin Federal Census was taken, Hannah, 60, and Stephen, 69, had moved onto the farm of 27-year-old Lyman Porter and his 27-year-old wife, Julia, and her two small children at the town of Winnebago, Wisconsin. The 1860 census shows Hannah living with her son-in-law, Simon Quatermass, in Neenah, Wisconsin. Stephen died in 1864. They had been married nearly 54 years. Hannah continued living with the Quatermass family and was included in the 1870 census as a resident of Vinland, Wisconsin.
