Raymond was the fourth child of Lemuel Jay Hart and Esther Maria Ashe. He lived on the farm with them until he graduated from college. He graduated from Vassar, MI, high school in 1934 and from Michigan State College in 1940.

He married September 14, 1940, to Martha Isabelle Latta, born September 15, 1917, at Jackson, MI. Following their marriage, they settled on that portion of home farm which included the Greek Revival farmhouse build by his great-grandfather, Lovira Hart, in 1852. To this union were born five sons, Robert Raymond, David Lloyd, Randall Charles, Jonathan Jay, and Lawrence Michael Hart.

Raymond and Martha were members of the First Baptist Church in Vassar, Michigan. Raymond was active in many programs, serving as a Sunday School teacher for about 50 years. He also held the office of Sunday School superintendent for many years, and was elected to the office of deacon or trustee for many terms. In later years he served as choir director and produced several holiday cantatas.

Raymond operated the farm until 1954, when he hired out to S&E Machine Tools west of Frankenmuth for the winter. He proved so adept at this precision work that it became a full time job. As he worked more hours at the firm, he began leasing out the farm land and in 1967 he stopped farming entirely. He spent his retirement years involved in church work at the Vassar Baptist Church, doing some traveling, and using his carpentry skills to maintain the buildings on the historic family farm. He died at the age of 86 as the result of a tragic automobile accident that occurred on December 10, 2002.
