My 2nd Great Grandfather on my biological father's side. According to granddaughter Eltana (Brown) Allen, Edwin Brown was "well off" financially. She says "...the Brown's came over with or settled in Pennsylvania near William Penn. One married a Jewish girl and either they or one of their descendants went to Canada. He had a lot of land and a lot of boys. As they became 21 he gave them a choice -- 1,000 acres or $1,000." The father of Edwin Brown must have been living in Canada because Eltana continues "...When his 21st birthday came he took the $1,000 and came to the U.S. and went to school to be a school teacher. He went to Nebraska to teach where he met Eltana (Baldwin).
