In 1852 they boarded the U.S. ship Realm in Hamburg for a four-week, two-day trip to the Port of New York. In 1953 they were joined in New York by Daniel's father, Hinrich Friedrich (Henny) Andersen of Kloetzin, b. 13 Feb 1787 in the parish Curau, Holstein. His mother Anna Margaretha nee Bedey, died in 1850 in Oldenburg.
1854 saw the birth of a son in Monroe County, NY. This child did not live past age six and never appeared on Iowa censuses with the rest of the family.
Their next two children were born in Iowa: In 1857 Bertha, and Edward in 1859. The 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census have the family living in Clinton County, Iowa.
