Suggested edit: Hiram was a sergeant in the Civil War in CO D of the 3rd Iowa Infantry. He was wounded at Shiloh, but served out his full 3 year term, and then reenlisted and served to the end of the war.
The 3rd Iowa fought in several major battles, including Shiloh, Vicksburg, Jackson, Atlanta and Sherman's march to the sea.
