Pfc. Brian J. Backus, 21, of Saginaw Township, Mich., died June 18, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. He is survived by his son Jack B. Backus of Harbor Beach, parents Alan and Anne Backus of Harbor Beach, and brother Paul Backus of Harbor Beach. His grandparents; Mary & Stuart Cleveland of Calabash, NC, and Lynn Backus of Massena, NY, and Jean Backus of Massena, NY. His Great-grandmother Francis Dunn of Ellenburg Center, NY, uncles Michael Backus of Ellenburg Center, NY, Rodney Backus of Ellenburg Center, NY, Tim Cleveland of England, Stuart Jr (Chong) of Colorado Springs, CO and Phil Makely of Fredericks, VA. He was preceded in death by an aunt; Kathleen Makely.
