"Captain Matthews with seven of his crew perished, by the upsetting of their boat in attempting to land from bark "Kadosh," wrecked on the southeast bar of Point Allerton, Hull, on the afternoon of December 26, 1872."
The six crewmembers were laid to rest in Hingham Cemetery and the compassionate care taken by that community to give them a Christian burial is well documented. It was Captain Matthews' first voyage as Shipmaster - he was 24, from Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
Christian was the Ship Steward.
