John O. Ackerman, age 101, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday (February 27, 2011) in St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper.
He was born in Jasper on May 22, 1909 to Florian and Catherine (Keusch) Ackerman. He married Teresa C. Burger on February 21, 1933; she preceded him in death on December 7, 1995.

John Ackerman was a retired farmer and a cabinet maker at the Jasper Seating Company in Jasper. He was well known in the local area for his bass fiddle playing. And had been active in several dance bands for more than 20 years. Mr. Ackerman served as President of the Family Drive-In Theatre. And was also a former member of the Planning Board for the City of Jasper.

He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as a church counselor for 7 years and was an usher for many years. Also a member of Jasper Knights of Columbus – was a member of the Ireland Sportsman Club – Jasper Outdoor Recreation Club and the Huntingburg Sportsman Club.

In his later years, Mr. Ackerman attributed his long life to Prayer and Exercise. He solemnly prayed the Rosary 4 or 5 times each day while living at the St. Charles Assisted Living Campus in Jasper. And, he rode his stationary bike up to 10 miles every day, on which he recorded enough mileage to cross the United States at least 4 times. Mr. Ackerman continued to play sheephead, an old German Card Game each week well into his 101 year of life with friends who came to visit with him at St. Charles.

Funeral services for John O. Ackerman will be held at 9:30: a.m. Saturday (March 5, 2011) in St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.

Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Friday (March 4, 2011) at the Becher & Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper.
