John was a chairmaker. He acquired the skills from worked for Kilmer & Johnson located in Wilkes Barre. In the 1850's he joined the Wyoming Artillerists. John served in the Army and was engaged in many important battles that took him across country. He was 56 years old at death. His wife Julia Burke went with him while he served and one occasion, worked with Buffalo Bill and the wives became friends.
