Marie Alice (Hillenburg) Jeffries
July 2, 1926 - November. 29, 1995

OOLITIC - Marie Alice Jeffries, 69, Oolitic, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, November 29, 1995 at her residence after a two-year illness.

Born in East Oolitic (Spioenkop), she was the daughter of Leston Roosevelt and Ruth Beryl (Arthur) Hillenburg.

Marie graduated from Oolitic High School in 1943. On May 1, 1944, she enrolled in the School of Nursing at Indianapolis City Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, (which eventually became the former Wishard Hospital). The Nursing School program was part of the U.S. World War II Cadet Nursing Corps.

June 15, 1943, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed a bill into law creating U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps to increase the number of nurses available for war efforts. More than 124,000 young women between the ages of 17 and 35 committed to serve in the nursing profession during this time. Cadets went through an accelerated training that fit a 36-month course into a 30-month period. Senior cadets then served their last six months in civilian, military and veteran hospitals and other public health agencies, which freed up registered nurses to help with the war effort. All cadets received a scholarship and a monthly stipend, effectively giving these young women an education they otherwise may not have been able to afford.

Harvey was discharged from the Navy on March 03, 1945, so Marie left Nursing School on March 26, 1945, and they were married in East Oolitic on April 7, 1945, by the Rev. Charles D. Pillow.

Harvey died Oct. 19, 1986, and Marie became a Hospice Volunteer until she herself became ill. She had always loved nursing and taught her children much of what she had learned while studying medicine.

She also had worked for J. C. Penney and Fabricast (Formerly Central Foundry and presently GM Powertrain) in Bedford, RCA in Bloomington, and as Secretary for Harvey Jeffries & Sons Skids and Pallets in Fayetteville.

She was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and active in Church Women United, Ladies Missionary Circle, and had been church clerk, youth leader and teacher at Oolitic Baptist Church for 50 years. She was active in Oolitic School reunions, Parent Teacher Association, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, VOCAL and Toastmasters International, and was Democratic precinct chairman.

She campaigned for UNICEF, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Dunn Hospice and a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army during Christmas holidays.

Her husband was blinded in World War II and both were involved in South Central Association of the Visually Impaired, American Council of the Blind (national and state levels), Disabled American Veterans, Blinded Veterans of America, The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 1993, she was awarded the Henry Hofstetter Award by the American Council of the Blind of Indiana which is presented annually in recognition of an outstanding sighted volunteer for exceptional service to ACBI. She was Hoosier Uplands Older Woman of the Year first runner-up, 1993 and past president of Oolitic Town Council. As a Democrat, she served on the Election Board for the Town of Oolitic for many years.

Survivors include two sons: Jimmie Lee Jeffries (Martha) of Springville and Jonnie Dale Jeffries (Kelsie) of Oolitic; three daughters: Joyce Marie Jeffries of Bedford, Janna (Gary W.) Anderson of Ellettsville and Joanne (Troy) Johnson of Oolitic; her mother, Ruth A. Hillenburg of East Oolitic; two sisters: Margie (Bill) Clampitt of New Castle and Ruby (Howard) Vaught of Winamac; one brother, Gerald "Bud" (Della Jean) Hillenburg of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and eight grandchildren: Terri Lynne Kelley, Brian Wayne Anderson, Tracy Leigh Jeffries, April Dawn Turpin, Coy Edward Hurley, Kathryn Marie Jeffries, Sara Marie Johnson, and Lindi Leigh Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leston Roosevelt Hillenburg, and one brother, Arthur Dale "Dedo" Hillenburg.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Avoca Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Cherry and Jim Woodward officiating. Burial will be in Gilgal Cemetery.
