Maren Olsdatter Mellem Kosmo (various spellings, including Kosmoe, Korsmo and Korsmoe) was the daughter of Ole Johansen Kopmoen and Olea Eriksdatter Skrigerud, the wife of Peder Olsen Kosmo, and the mother of their children Olivia, Otto, John, Minda, Henry and Martha Kosmo. Maren; her husband; their two children born in Norway, Olivia and Otto; her youngest sibling, Ole Olsen Mellem; and her husband's brother, Halvor Olsen Korsmoe, left Norway on the bark _Edda_, arriving in Quebec on June 4, 1873. The Kosmo family settled at Eau Claire. Another brother, Erik Olsen Mellem, had left Norway in 1871 and settled with his family in Decorah, Iowa.
Maren's other siblings were John Olsen Mellem, Karen Olsdatter Østby, Olea Olsdatter Mellem, and Olivia Olsdatter Holtmon.
Maren Mellem Kosmo is buried in the Lutheran Church Cemetery, 1st Addition. Her stone indicates birth in 1840. The Norwegian record of her marriage gives her birthdate as 25/2/40 and her father as Ole Olsen Mellem (at Hokåsen). HOWEVER, there is no parish birth record with that date and those names. Her birth is recorded in Brandval Parish records on 20 September 1839 and her father is Ole Johannesen Mellem. The Brandvalboka for Hokåsen also cites the 1839 date and Ole Johannesen as her father, along with Peder Kosmo as her spouse. The Mellem family still on the farm at Hokåsen in 1987 had on their wall the same family portrait of the Maren and Peder Kosmo family that a family member in Wisconsin had showed me, so there is no doubt that the marriage record--for whatever reason--is incorrect.
