James was the son of James Brooks and Eliza Farland.

For many years Prof. Brooks was superintendent of the Dallas public schools. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the board of deacons and the board of trustees of that church.

Prof. Brooks was survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Hickman Brooks, and a brother, C. L. Brooks, of Missouri. Dallas Lodge No. 760, A. F. & A. M. had charge of the ceremonies at the grave.

"James Albert Brooks was superintendent of schools in Graham, Texas, in the 1880s. He had a stroke of paralysis in 1920 and never recovered. I've found his name in Graham, Texas, records for three years."
