During the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941, George was killed when a bomb exploded at the Cherry Blossom Sweet Shop in Honolulu at South Kukui Street and Peleula Lane. Killed were George, his uncle, and three cousins. George died from "friendly fire", improperly fused US Navy anti-aircraft shells that exploded on contact with the ground instead of in the air next to attacking Japanese planes. According to the a recent government source [U.S. Census Bureau History: Pearl Harbor, Dec. 2, 2016], 103 civilians were killed as a result of anti-aircraft shells that day.


Obituary Dec 10,1941:

"MANGANELLI, GEORGE JAY, (alias George Akiyama) a nephew of Jitsuo Hirasaki, who was spending a week end with his uncle and cousins, was also a bomb victim. He was 14 years, old, and a student at St. Louis College. Body was cremated." [Honolulu Advertiser, Hawaii]

May 31, 1924 , a Marriage License issued in Honolulu for Jiro Okada (age 23, bachelor) and Miyuki Segawa (age 19, previously divorced April 8, 1924), father: Magosaburo Segawa. Newspaper announcement: In Honolulu, May 31, 1924, Jiro Okada and Mrs. Mizuki Segawa.

On Oct 3, 1927, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jiro Okada, named "George Haruyuki Okada".

In Dec 1932, George's mother, then named Miyuki Okada, divorced Jiro Okada.

In Oct 1934, George's name was legally changed from George Haruyuki Okada to George Haruyuki Akiyama. His mother legally changed her name from Miyuki Okada to Beatrice Segawa Akiyama.

In 1935, his mother married Mr. John Manganelli.

In Feb 1937, George was legally adopted by John Manganelli, and his name changed from George Haruyuki Okada to George Jay Manganelli.

In April 1941, George's mother Beatrice Manganelli married Marvin Wilkerson.
