William J. "Bill" Achilles, 77, of Athens, Tenn., died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of Boltonville, he was a resident of Athens for more than 43 years. He lived in Groton for a number of years where he attended school and graduated from Groton High School. He worked for several years in Groton and moved to Tennessee when he married in 1965.

Achilles was a son of the late Freeland James and Georgina Flanders Achilles, and was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Bailey; and one brother, Albert Achilles. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was retired from Taylor Pittsburg after 30 years of service. He was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, where he was a charter member for more than 35 years and also taught Sunday school and served as a trustee and treasurer.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ina Pressley Achilles of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Cathy Pressley of Miami, Fla., and Freeland and Deanna Achilles of Athens; one sister, Alice Morse of Warrensburg, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Amanda Martinez and her husband Dru, Matthew Pressley, Cathleen Pressley and Chris, Beth, Abby and Alli Achilles; and one great-grandson, Anthony Martinez.

Funeral services were held on July 13.
