Billy phoned his father later that evening, asking if he could go fishing with "some friends" at Lake Sam Rayburn, near Lufkin in Texas. His father agreed, with his son promising to return home in approximately three days and ending the call with the words, "I love you too, Dad."
Tragically, Billy was instead abducted and murdered by Dean Corll and his two accomplices, Elmer Wayne Henley and David Owen Brooks. His body was then buried at Sam Rayburn Lake, along with three other victims of Corll.
Lawrence's body was found on August 9, 1973. He was buried in Forest Park Cemetery.
Horace Lawrence, a widower, took great comfort in the knowledge the final words he and his son exchanged with each other were the words, "I love you."
